For the Love of Eros

Welcome to DreamWorld's Valetine's Day Collection. To the ancients love was important and their god of love for the Greeks was Eros, who resided over lust, love and intercourse and was also worshiped as a fertility deity. His Roman counterpart, Cupid, was worshipped as the god of desire and love, while Venus ruled over the love of a man and a woman.

Valentine's Day is a day that has been set aside on Feb. 14th, when lovers could celebrate the love they shared. The holiday is named after two among the numerous Early Christian martyrs named Valentine. And as time went by the day became associated with romantic love in the circle of Geoffrey Chaucer in the High Middle Ages, when the tradition of courtly love flourished.

By 1847, the Valentine card became popular, and that tradition is still celebrated today.

Through the years, the idea of mythological love and the celebration of the ancients gods and goddesses of love became popular, until we now recognize St. Valentine's Day with getting a gift of a valentine's card and 'getting shot by Cupid's Arrow'.
